Each of the past two summers students have come to OGI from around the world to participate in the "Festival Summer Festival," a shortcourse and workshop organized by Mike Macon of OGI and Alan Black of the University of Edinburgh. A goal of each of the summer workshop is to produce a TTS system in a new language.
In Summer 1997, Alejandro Barbosa of TLATOA Universidad de las Americas Puebla (UDLA) built the OGIspanish synthesizer for Mexican Spanish, including two diphone voices. This work was supported by NSF, CSLU, and UDLA.
In Summer 1998, Karin Mueller and Bettina Sauberlich of the Institute of Natural Language Processing at the University of Stuttgart, Germany and Horst Meyer of the Institute of Communication Research and Phonetics (IKP) at the University of Bonn developed the OGIgerman synthesizer. This project was supported by the Fonix corporation.
