Vocabulary Tutor

We are pleased to announce the availability of an initial release of the CSLU Vocabulary Tutor. This tutor was a joint effort between CSLU, the Tucker-Maxon Oral School and the Perceptual Science Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). The work was funded by an NSF grant awarded in 1997 and was featured in an ABC PrimeTIME Thursday segment.

To download the CSLU Vocabulary Tutor please register and follow the email instructions you receive. Please take a moment to fill out the Baldi survey, then read the Tucker-Maxon Vocabulary Tutor documentation.

System Requirements:

The CSLU Vocabulary Tutor currently runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP on Intel (or compatible) processors only. We recommend a machine with at least 128 Mb of RAM and a 500 MHz CPU.

The "typical" download (which includes two Text-To-Speech voices) is 36 Mb. It needs at least 80 Mb of free disk space. The "complete" download is 109 Mb in size and requires around 210 Mb of available disk space. The install program is fully restartable. If the download is interrupted for any reason, re-run i20b2.exe and it will continue at the point where it was interrupted.

Please note:
  • This software features Baldi, an animated 3D head developed at the Perceptual Science Laboratory. OHSU's license agreement with UCSC allows us to distribute Baldi only for use with existing CSLU Vocabulary Tutor lessons. This download does not include the editor required to create new lessons.

  • Example CSLU Vocabulary Tutor lessons and documentation can found at:
    • Tucker-Maxon.
    • The "Language Player" site at the Perceptual Science Laboratory.
    • On the Windows Start menu, under "CSLU Toolkit"->"Example Lessons"
    • (more to follow)

  • A version of the CSLU Vocabulary Tutor will be released as part of the CSLU Toolkit in the near future. This version will allow creation of new lessons that feature an animated agent from the Center for Spoken Language Research at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
